My anti virus software expired last week. Noticing that PC World had a special offer on McAffee, I thought that rather than renew my existing software I’d wait a couple of days until I got a chance to visit PC world. My PC was unprotected for two days.
Guess what; in the space of two days, two bastard programs, Online Security Center and Security Troubleshooting downloaded themselves onto my PC. They appear on the programs list, but do not appear on the uninstall list, so I can’t delete them. Even worse, they have disabled System Restore, so I can’t get rid of then that way.
I am being inundated by penis enlargement pop ups, and the bastard things have installed an icon on my tool bar that continually sticks up a balloon informing me that my computer is infested with spy ware. I have to run a virus scan after every internet session as they are downloading ad ware and trojans. This is irritating to say the least.
I’m going to have to call in my nerdhead neighbour to see if he can sort things out. In the interim, if any techheads out there can suggest anything that I can do I will be extremely grateful.
As far as I’m concerned, the pond life that develop and disseminate this kind of software should be suspended by their testicles and beaten to death with a large stick. Bastards.

Hold on there Garfer. Let me go get the Scooter Boy!
Too good for them garfer, flaying alive and dabbed lightly in salt is such a better way of dealing with the bastards.
Or else try this
Which type are you?
Sell your PC and go out and buy yourself a Mac. Other than that reinstall windows and hope for the best.
i had a virus that hijacked my browser and directed me to all sorts of weird and wonderful places. i ended up reinstalling everything as all the geeky sites i checked suggested solutions that appeared to be written in aramaic and were the techy equivalent of boiling hummingbirds in the piss of a virgin at midnight on a thursday.
i've just done yet another reinstall as despite zone alarm, anti-spyware and a firewall another irritating little bastard snuck under the wire.
cunts.
Bizarrley enough, since I published this post the icon has disappeared. Maybe there is a god after all. Then again, it'll probably return to plague me.
A reinstall is the option of last resort. It is a total pain in the arse
Oh dear!
First up, get yourself a copy of (if you don't already have it) Ad Aware, you can get it free from here - it's quit good at detecting and removing most stuff.
Secondly, get yourself a copy of Microsoft Antispyware (just google it) - it's another free download.
Run them and they should clear most stuff out.
And hold on spending any money for stuff at PC World or wherever, once your broadband is on, let me know and I'll zip you a whole bunch of stuff :)
Check you email too Garfy, just sent you the phone number if you need a walk-through.
Oh bless em.
They will only charge you £5 a min.
I have Ad Aware.I'll download the Microsoft anti spyware and give that a go.
Ta for that.
Dump the Ad Aware first, then dowload the Microsoft one.The latter works better, is simpler to use and does a better job of cleaning your system.
Oh right I'll bear that in mind too - I've always used adaware and had no problems. My PC was unprotected for an hour while I was arsing about after its upgrade. It'd better be OK or there'll be TROUBLE!
Oh, and good luck Garfer, I feel your pain.
Thanks to Pig & Taz's sound advice, I downloaded the Microsoft anti spyware. I'm no fan of Microsoft, but this is an excellent tool.
I haven't been able to remove the bastard programs, but I have been able to stop them running.
Everything seems to be ok now. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
Ta very much Pig & Taz. You win a gold star each.
Garfy - an easy way to stop stuff running is to do the following:
1. Click 'Start' followed by 'Run'
2. In the wee box that pops up, type in 'msconfig' (without the quotes)
This will bring up the System Configuration Utility
3. Click on the 'Startup' tab
4. Untick the stuff you DON'T want to start up when you reboot your pc.
5. Click the 'Services' tab and have a look for anything that matches the things you don't want and untick them (its usually quicker to find them if you tick the 'hide all Microsoft services' box)
6. Click 'Ol'
7. Reboot your pc.
And don;t forget to let me know when you've got your broadband on.
Shite.
Step 6 should have been click 'Ok'!
Google "AVG" Garfer, there free Virus checker is pretty good, althoug I use McAffe mysef as I got a copy wit a perpetual license from work.
If you go to advanced tools and select system explorers in the Microsoft anti spyware, you can view the start up list and delete as appropriate.
It's a lot easier to determine what the individual programs are than in the system configuration utility.
I had a look under the Services tab and deleted a couple of things.
Thanks for the advice.
Ewww. Get you, becoming all tech-savvy in the space of 24 hours!
I only take an interest in tech stuff when something gos tits up.
It's been an interesting..er..learning experience.
murphy's law dear.
Errrrrrrr.......Free AVG - get it here and ditch all the twattish corporations that want to charge for something as fund-a-fuckin'-mental as virus protection.
